Introducing

Hey there! I'm Mike Salkeld, a web designer located in Bolton, Lancashire. In September 2003 I started trading as a business under the company name of Luminance Design, with the goal of producing high quality, tasteful projects for the online environment.

The main output of which is static web sites [bespoke, or one of my two 'pack' offerings], HTML e-mail newsletters and HTML e-mail signatures, all created specifically for individual clients requirements. Aimed at start ups companies and SME [small to medium enterprises] businesses, the target is to produce effect, appealing and functional solutions, for a reasonable cost.

I consider myself to have a tasteful design style, allowing for refreshingly clean, usable interfaces that entice interaction that isn't hindered by distraction, due to my avoidance of adverts and banner usage.

Developing

For those that are interested in the 'behind the scenes' side of my work, you'll be happy to know I semantically hand code my sites in W3C compliant HTML, using a PHP framework for modular construction, styled with CSS and where appropriate, use the JQuery JavaScript library to enhance functionality. All sites and e-mails are constructed to have accessibility in case of CSS or JavaScript being disabled.

Prior to a live launch, sites are tested on all current releases of web browsers on Macintosh, Windows and Linux platforms to verify usability and integrity - as well as debugging any issues!

In the case of web sites, a test for small screen rendering is run to see if a site is manageable on a portable device such as a mobile phone. For e-mail newsletters and branded signatures, these are tested on current versions of e-mail clients on the afore mentioned operating systems and some webmail services.

Luminance Design can distribute rich HTML e-mail [with a plain text version - just in case!] to your supplied client mailing list - ideal for your company newsletters, announcements and news updates.

Providing

While the core focus is digital and screen based, I also provide a printed product within the package deals I offer. My Flat Pack and Expansion Pack offerings have a business card design and printing component, these of which are primarily aimed at new businesses and company rebrands.

I frequently undertake 'slicing', 'chopping' and 'PSD 2 HTML' tasks to assist other web developers. If you have a existing design [e.g. JPEG image, Acrobat PDF or even PhotoShop document] I can convert it as necessary for you. If you don't, then I can create a design for you based on your brief.
